Henry Owings
CATEGORY: Interviews

Meet Henry Owings, #32 on Chunklet Magazine’s list of the 100 Biggest Assholes In Rock.
He should know since he compiled and edited the list for his own magazine Chunklet, one of the funniest and most scathing music and comedy publications ever. Each issue is full of smart interviews with amazing bands and the cream of the comedy crop (Jon Benjamin, Sarah Silverman, and Robert Smigel, amongst many others). On top of that, Owings and his gang of contributors pokes fun at the inflated egos of indie rock bands, celebrities, and, most importantly, themselves.
Yet, for every band Owings takes to task within the pages of his magazine, there are dozens more who he loves and supports. He books countless shows in Athens and Atlanta and, in Chunklet, champions many a band often in the same issue that they are excoriated.
Invisible Limb had a chance to catch up with Owings as he prepared to celebrate Chunklet’s 13th anniversary with a series of shows and events set for the end of October.

El Boxeo
CATEGORY: Interviews

If you haven’t gotten the hint yet, here’s your third reminder: Suburban Sprawl Music’s El Boxeo is a bizarre band. Consisting mainly of violin, bass, and drums, and occasionally very little else, they’d have to be. Here’s a little insight, thanks to the wonders of Gmail, into the history of the band and the very brains of the three wonderful people that make it up: Lisa Norton, Zach Norton, and Danny Sperry.

Myspacing with Fred Armisen
CATEGORY: Interviews

Anyone who has followed NBC’s Saturday Night Live lately knows there are some interesting events afoot.
Besides the confirmed departure of female cast members Rachel Dratch and Tina Fey, there are rumors circulating that four other players will face the chopping block this coming winter when SNL starts it’s 32nd season. Some of the names being thrown around are veterans Horatio Sanz, Maya Rudolph, Chris Hammond and Chris Parnell, as well as younger players Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Finesse Mitchell, and- well, basically anyone not named Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, or Jason Sudeikis. Sudeikis, of course, has just been confirmed as the next host of Weekend Update, replacing former duo Amy Poehler and Tiny Fey, so that takes him out of the mix. Also, Sanz has recently spoke out denying his departure from the show.
One of the other few names that have escaped the axe rumors is Fred Armisen. The comedian, who started his entertainment career as the drummer for 90’s punk band Trenchmouth, has been with SNL since 2002, and he recently took some time out to talk with Invisible Limb via his new Myspace page. Here is a brief Q&A session we had with the man behind talk show host’s Ferecito and Prince.
Enjoy!

Dengue Fever
CATEGORY: Interviews

A band that truly stands apart from the rest, Dengue Fever was a crowd pleaser at San Francisco’s The Independent at a recent Saturday night performance. With energetic fans at the foot of the stage and rows of enthusiastic attendees crowding in behind them, Dengue Fever has gained quite a following in the Bay Area. With music that the band members don’t even try to describe, it is best said that one should simply pick up a copy of their latest CD, Escape From Dragon House, or better yet, attend a show. See a brief band history and this writer’s description of their one-of-a-kind sound here.
Shortly after their performance I had the opportunity to speak with bassist Senon Williams about the show, their latest album, and the band’s trip to lead singer Ch’hom Nimol’s native Cambodia.

Baby Dayliner
CATEGORY: Interviews

Press folk love it. We at Invisible Limb love it. In less than a month you will fall in love with it too. We are talking, of course, about Baby Dayliner’s much anticipated sophomore full length Critics Pass Away, set to be released this May on Brassland Records. No other record this year has hit us this hard or this strong. In fact, we dig it so much we’re convinced there doesn’t exist a stereo, iPod, or dance club playlist that can say no to this savvy hybrid of pop, new wave, and soul.
