Funny Story
Headphone Treats
Cassavetes, an Atlanta-based band, have just released their first full-length album. And for those who have been patiently waiting, it was well worth the wait. A mix of previous band mates and “Craig’s List” finds, Cassavetes began by developing songs lead singer Robbie Horlick wrote while playing in the now defunct !The Killing’s Gotta Stop, Ese!. As they grew, Cassavetes started performing and writing songs together. Funny Story is the fruit of their labor.
One of the wonderful things about Funny Story is the high level of musicianship portrayed in throughout the album. Each song is delicately crafted, and whether it is an expansive ballad, or the delicately stated keyboard/guitar duet and trumpet flourishes in “My Heart Your Beat”, each contains its own specific nuances. The music is always interesting and well-balanced. And the vocals, while reminiscent of lackadaisical sound of Bob Dylan and Odelay!-era Beck, are soothing and pleasant to listen to.
Cassavetes have the potential to enjoy a bright musical future. Their sound is almost sure to change–they are loosing their keyboard, trumpet, etc., player to Canada–but this hasn’t stopped them yet. While they grow, and as they welcome new musicians to their band, Cassavetes are sure to retain their high-quality standards.
