Music without words? Some say instrumental albums are boring and that if they wanted to listen to music without words, they would just dust off that old Classical album on the shelf. For those of you who prefer the rock, there’s no need to worry: Lone Wolf and Cub create the alt/indie music you’re used to hearing.
The concept here:
1. Determine a short and simple melody.
2. Repeat the short melody throughout the song.
3. Add drums.
4. Repeat the short melody throughout the song.
5. Add backing guitar.
6. Repeat the short melody throughout the song.
7. Add keyboard tracks.
8. Repeat the short melody throughout the song.
Lone Wolf and Cub have successfully composed a completely instrumental indie rock album, and their originality and creativity take place in the inner workings of their music. “Sex Like the Mantis” begins slowly with a simple picked guitar melody like most of their tunes, but later culminates with the intensifying sound of a dial tone. Perhaps this is the coital mantis?
“Bring Back The Dagwood, Denny’s” has a completely organic and homegrown sound unlike what is heard on the rest of the album. The majority of the backing percussion is a simple foot stomp keeping the beat. The main attraction in this song is the “la la na na” folk-style vocals.
And then there are the song titles. I am not sure how they came up with these, what the significance is, or if the titles correlate with the accompanying music, but some of the more entertaining ones include, “She Put a Bicycle Into Her Pocket and Walked Into a Scary,” “I Will Hammerpunch Your Clavicle,” “Be There or Be Tiananmen Square,” and of course, “You Can’t be a Prisoner, You Don’t Look Like a Zebra/Jailbreak!!!”
The only problem with Wonder, is Ground on Frost? is the over-stated and very simple melodies. In the proper mindset this can be overcome by paying closer attention to the other musical happenings within the song, or by simply absorbing these focal points into your groove. Repetition aside, Wonder, is Ground on Frost?’s relaxed and wandering qualities make it an excellent album to be placed in the soundtrack lineup for your next road trip.
