Harvey Danger
Little by Little
Kill Rock Stars
Although I didn’t know it at the time, Harvey Danger was probably the first indie band I ever listened to. I would ride around town on my 21 speed mountain bike drinking orange soda and enjoying their now classic Where Have All The Merry Makers Gone? on my cassette Walkman. Now, fast forwarding to modern times, I’m driving around town in my beat up pick up truck drinking orange soda and listening to the same album on my iPod; you might say some things never change. Sure I’m an older man with more refined tastes, but it seems the boys in Harvey Danger have too undergone some refining while they were away.
Their first new album in 5 years, Little by Little, is currently available for free download LEGALLY on the web; the band claims it is an experiment to test just how powerful a marketing tool the internet is. Of course, they still give you the options of buying the cd in stores or donating money if you so choose. The album itself is pretty good. It’s got all the qualities of Harvey Danger that a fan should expect. The first single, “Cream and Bastards Rise”, is one of the strongest I’ve heard in some time, blending well with the rest of the album.
That enjoyable feel of Harvey Danger has been retained on Little by Little, however, after listening to the whole album, you realize that it sounds a little too much ‘the same’. The boys in the band haven’t done much evolving while I wasn’t looking. Sure, the songs are far more piano driven than before, but that doesn’t do too much to revolutionize their sound. But to be fair, I still really enjoyed this album. Despite it’s lack of growth, Little by Little is a fun lighthearted romp with a band who dropped off the radar longer then I would have liked. So welcome back Harvey. I hope this time you’ll stick around.

Wow. I never thought I’d hear from this band ever again. I’m definitely going to check this out.
