When you’re in the mood for some electro/power pop-rock in the vein of Queen-meets-Scissor Sisters-meets Rocky, Baby Teeth is your band. Each song on their new EP is upbeat, catchy, and skillfully crafted down to the last flourish of backing vocals and melodic modulation; another one of this band’s many strengths is that each member is not only a talented musician, but a crafty songwriter.
The three inner tracks on For the Heathers are each band member’s rendition of a song for Heather, and are identified by their initials—“Heather via PS”, “Heather via PA”, “Heather via JC”–and each track is extremely well crafted and equally different in style. While a difference in artistic vision can be detrimental to any musical group, it can also be used advantageously. In Baby Teeth’s case, the act of using three radically different tracks written individually by each band member on their sophomore release is a bold move and just may afford them some extra notice. If they are all talented songwriters, then why not let the world know about it?
Of course, there are many listeners who prefer more of a coalescence in style throughout a recording. To these folks I suggest purchasing Baby Teeth’s 2005 release, The Baby Teeth Album. While it sets the standard for the quality of excellence portrayed on their more recent EP, The Baby Teeth Album almost sounds timid in execution—musically they don’t take the bold moves with instrumentation and falsetto voicing that compose a valuable mainstay on the EP.
No matter how you slice it, Baby Teeth is a musical powerhouse with strong musicianship, superior songwriting, and upbeat music that is never trite. Keep an eye out for these guys—we are sure to be hearing more from them in the future.
