Wizardzz - Hidden City of Taurmond Posted on March 22nd, 2006 by Reid

Wizardzz - Hidden City of TaurmondWizardzz
Hidden City of Taurmond

Load Records

Brian Gibson has decided to keep up with his Lightning Bolt partner Brian Chippendale by coming out with a side project of his own. Wizardzz sees Gibson teaming up with Rich Porter of Bug Sized Mind and trading in his bass for a set of drums, in the process they have created something much different than what both musicians are usually known for. Gone are the hard edges of noise, replaced by a synth filled journey of epic proportions. In fact, the little sticker on the cover told me it was a “creamsicle journey”. Oddly enough, that does a very good job of describing what you are listening to; a smooth, dreamy, synth driven album that keeps the listener interested in exploring further. Continue Reading »

Nic Garcia - The Desperate Ones Posted on March 19th, 2006 by Andrew Allingham

Yer Bird Records

Hearing the genre “Singer/Songwriter” sort of makes me cringe nowadays. You know you’re either going to get something unique, or something that sounds like every other musician in America. While Nic Garcia’s sound is seemingly familiar, it differs enough from the rest of the genre to make it worth listening to at least once through. Continue Reading »

Kind of Like Spitting - The Thrill of the Hunt Posted on March 14th, 2006 by Rich Belize

Kind of Like Spitting - The Thrill of the HuntKind of Like Spitting
The Thrill of the Hunt

Redder Records

Releasing two full length albums in the span of 4 months, Ben Barnett is making quite a statement as an artist. In fact ever since 2002’s misguided Bridges Worth Burning (Barsuk), Barnett has made every effort to reform Kind of Like Spitting into an incorruptible outlet for his distinct musical vision. That means full control over his songs, from writing to recording to album artwork and track listing; if Barnett wants a drawing of a well endowed hunter chasing a kangaroo with a spear on the cover, then that is what will be on the cover (well, maybe not). Either way Barnett has rebounded quite nicely since his darker days on Barsuk Records. In the Red, his long awaited follow up to Bridges Worth Burning, was finally released in November 2005 on Hush Records to little fanfare, yet that seems to be how the Portland native prefers it. Barnett and his songs work best out of the limelight; his newest record, The Thrill of the Hunt, is a testament to this. Continue Reading »

New Estate - Considering… Posted on March 14th, 2006 by Reid

New Estate - Considering...New Estate
Considering…

Kittridge Records

New Estate is your average lo-fi indie rock band. Considering… is your average indie rock album. It isn’t bad by any means however. It’s the sort of album I would listen to while folding my laundry. The songs are non intrusive, but fun. Songs like Open and Learning Zone have a feel of Yo La Tengo to them, while Collage and Don’t Like the Way have the feel of a band like Pavement. Laid back vibes permeate throughout So L’il’s latest album, Dear Kathy.  The record, which sits somewhere between a long EP and short full length, is an accessible amalgam of atmosphere and mood. Continue Reading »

Pearl Jam - World Wide Suicide Posted on March 8th, 2006 by Rich Belize

Pearl Jam

Veteran grunge rockers Pearl Jam are back in the spotlight, announcing the release of their 8th self-titled studio album.  Slated for May 2nd, the album is supposedly the band’s most collaborative effort, featuring two songs written by guitarist Stone Gossard.  It is also their first studio album since 2002’s Riot Act.

World Wide Suicide is the first single off the album and is set to hit radio today.  You can download it here, free and legal, before you hear it over the airwaves.  It is also available for free on Pearl Jam’s official website, www.pearljam.com.
