Although I didn’t know it at the time, Harvey Danger was probably the first indie band I ever listened to. I would ride around town on my 21 speed mountain bike drinking orange soda and enjoying their now classic Where Have All The Merry Makers Gone? on my cassette Walkman. Now, fast forwarding to modern times, I’m driving around town in my beat up pick up truck drinking orange soda and listening to the same album on my iPod; you might say some things never change. Brian Gibson has decided to keep up with his Lightning Bolt partner Brian Chippendale by coming out with a side project of his own. Wizardzz sees Gibson teaming up with Rich Porter of Bug Sized Mind and trading in his bass for a set of drums, in the process they have created something much different than what both musicians are usually known for. Gone are the hard edges of noise, replaced by a synth filled journey of epic proportions. In fact, the little sticker on the cover told me it was a “creamsicle journey”. Oddly enough, that does a very good job of describing what you are listening to; a smooth, dreamy, synth driven album that keeps the listener interested in exploring further. Continue Reading »

New Estate is your average lo-fi indie rock band. Considering… is your average indie rock album. It isn’t bad by any means however. It’s the sort of album I would listen to while folding my laundry. The songs are non intrusive, but fun. Songs like Open and Learning Zone have a feel of Yo La Tengo to them, while Collage and Don’t Like the Way have the feel of a band like Pavement.
