The Low Lows - Fire onthe Bright Sky

Fire On The Bright Sky, a desolate and down-tempo album, is the debut release of the remaining members of Parker and Lily, newly re-formed as The Low Lows.

Described by the band as “a radiant, desperate prom-night of a record,” Fire On The Bright Sky is quiet but noisy, hopeful but sad, and distant but in your face. The Low Lows cry out to their listeners with reverb-enhanced guitars, echoing vocals, and a sprinkling of Farfisa organ. Lyrically, their first album is poetic and laden with hidden meaning. “Wolves Eat Dogs” seems to inadvertently discuss a fallen love, and “Dear Flies, Love Spider” is endearingly imaginative.

With the signature vocals of the male half of Parker and Lily, P.L. Noon maintains his trademark in the latest chapter of his musical career. Interestingly, The Low Lows’ guitar-based sound is very similar to the final Parker and Lily album from which the band took its name–an album that disposed of the band’s formerly upbeat electronic sound.

True to their name, The Low Lows’ music is far from upbeat, but they wear it well. Fast and exuberant music is not difficult to come by, but The Low Lows have successfully created a more delicate, relaxed, and melancholy sound–truly an intriguing achievement.
