Though chameleon-like in their musicians and monikers, bandleader Christian Burnout (formerly Chris Bernat) and Chrash (formerly The Fresh Prints and Prints of Wales among others) are steadfast in their musical continuity.
It’s difficult to succinctly describe Chrash’s sound, but to say they include tinges of surf and psychedelic rock in their rhythmically defined indie sound would be one way to go about the task. Nearly every song on Audio Feng Shui is centered around drums and their driving rhythm, and more often than not, the guitar chugs right along with them. Most of Chrash’s melodic value is derived from occasional keyboard licks and vocals.
Lyricism is another one of Chrash’s defining factors. While not necessarily introspective, their lyrics are original and not overly mundane. “New Immigrant Song” and “The Comedian” are imaginative and playful. The lightheartedness in Chrash’s music makes them a fun and relaxed listen. Another refreshing aspect of Chrash’s music: love and heartbreak are not themes of choice.
To successfully create a unique sound without being overly esoteric takes talent and vision, and Chrash has managed to accomplish this feat. They have created a stylistically and lyrically original niche for themselves that few can match. Only time will tell what Chrash will come up with next.
