CSS – Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above Posted on June 15th, 2006 by Rich Belize

In case you were wondering, yes, Brazilian natives CSS are referring to that Death From Above. It seems that along with American cinema, HTML extensions, and pop culture, the funky bass and drums duo Death from Above 1979 have made quite the impression on SubPop’s newest dance/party/punk band. The Portuguese-speaking-English-singing CSS have even named their debut album, Cansai de Ser Sexy, after a Beyonce Knowles reference (Cansei de Ser Sexy when translated to English is Tired of Being Sexy). If there is anything to gather from this it’s that apparently Brazil watches more MTV than we do.

At any rate, sprinkling your debut album with references to other popular and not so popular bands is probably not the safest thing to do. If your song isn’t slamming, off the hook, fantastic, it might come off as cheesy or lame; not that I’m not going to try to make that distinction for you (although I will say that this particular single is not much to my taste).  The main purpose of this post is to educate you, the public, about a new band from one of indie rock’s most popular labels. Take a listen for yourself and decide whether it’s wildly dance-tastic or simply derivative.  :-)
